What Nose Work Is and what it does for your pup

Nose work, also referred to as scent work, teaches a dog to locate a target odor and clearly indicate its source. Unlike obedience training, scent work relies on independent problem solving. The handler observes and interprets behavior rather than directing each movement.

Owners searching for scent work classes Murrieta often want enrichment that builds more than excitement, and engagement.

A 2026 pilot study found that dogs participating in nose work scored higher on an owner-rated executive function scale (DEFS) compared to dogs without scent training experience (Kluess & Neff, 2026). Executive function includes attentional control and task follow-through. In the same study, dogs with more nose work training were less likely to give up.

For owners, that research means: dogs that do scent work training, focus longer on challenges.

If you’ve been searching for scent work classes Murrieta that offer more than basic enrichment, this is the next logical step.

How Our Nose Work Training Works

See how we build search skills to create reliable odor commitment.

1. Foundation Phase

We begin by building search drive through clear reinforcement patterns. Dogs learn that odor predicts reward. Early clarity establishes sustained engagement.

*Intro to nosework is $180.00   for a 6 week class and meets on Thursdays at 6pm

2. Target Odor Introduction

Dogs are introduced to formal target odors using controlled handling methods. We emphasize commitment to source rather than handler cues.

*Intro to scent work   is $180.00 for a 6 week class   and meets Thursdays at 4:30pm

3.Environmental Expansion

Searches progress from containers to interiors, exteriors, vehicles, and varied surfaces. Increasing environmental complexity strengthens discrimination skills.

*Continuing nosework   is $30.00   per class and meets on Fridays at 4:30pm and 6:00pm   and select Sundays at 1:00pm

I can not say enough good things about this place especially the self service dog wash. Easy to use, clean, well stocked, and a fantastic value! Plus the staff was super friendly and helpful! Would highly recommend coming here if you are looking for a self service dog wash!!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Not sure how we just found this place but it was a great experience with the self serve grooming stations. Everything was clean and easy to use. Just bring your dog. Staff was VERY helpful and nice. This beats washing at home or taking my dogs to petsmart and having them traumatized afterwards. If you’re able to wash and dry yourself, it’s only $20 on the weekdays (or they have have groomers too). Super reasonable prices. We’re coming here once a month now. Highly recommend!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rough collies are not the easiest to groom: double coated, long hair. Ali made my one year old look ring ready. Could not have wanted any better. She is a pro. First class. I am happy and relieved, that I have a groomer I can trust, after having had a terrible experience elsewhere.

  • Can nose work prepare my dog for AKC scent work competition?

Yes. Our progression aligns with AKC scent work skill requirements, including odor recognition, environmental searches, and handler coordination.

  • Does nose work improve executive function in dogs?

A 2026 pilot study found dogs participating in nose work scored higher on an owner-rated executive function scale (DEFS) than dogs without scent training experience (Kluess & Neff, 2026). Executive function includes impulse control, attentional regulation, and persistence under challenge.

  • What is the DEFS scale?

The Dog Executive Function Scale (DEFS) is a validated multi-factor instrument developed to measure cognitive control traits in dogs. Validation studies found correlations between structured training exposure and higher DEFS scores (Foraita et al., 2022; Foraita et al., 2023).

  • Is nose work a fitness program?

No. The 2026 pilot study did not find differences in dog or human fitness scores between scent-trained and non-scent-trained groups. The benefit is cognitive engagement.

  • Does conditioning affect scent performance?

A review of working-dog olfaction indicates that heat, fatigue, and conditioning levels can influence scent detection reliability (Jenkins et al., 2018). Environmental pacing and workload management matter.

  • How is nose work dog training different from obedience?

Obedience relies on handler direction. Nose work relies on independent problem solving by the dog.

  • What is the difference between nose work and AKC scent work?

Nose work builds foundational search and odor discrimination skills. AKC scent work is a structured competitive format that builds on those skills.

  • Do you offer k9 nose work classes in Murrieta?
